Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd and foreign minister Stephen Smith are expected to meet today to discuss their country’s policy towards Fiji.

This follows the expulsion of Australia’s envoy from Fiji yesterday, with Fiji Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama accusing Australia of interfering in the island nation’s judicial appointments.

Australian television reports receiving various emails from its audience in Australia and around the Pacific calling on the government’s of Australia and New Zealand not to meddle in Fiji’s internal affairs.

Fiji has also recalled its envoy to Australia Kamlesh Arya, but has not made any statement on its representatives in New Zealand.

New Zealand is considering also sending Fijian diplomats home in retaliation to the expulsion of acting Deputy High Commissioner Todd Cleaver.
