Cabinet is expected to confirm former military commander and Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau as Fiji’s new President today.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama told FijiLive that Cabinet would confirm Nailatikau’s appointment at this meeting.
Nailatikau was appointed Vice-President in April, soon after the abrogation of the 1997 Constitution, to fill a position formerly held by ex-High Court judge and Bau high chief Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi until 2006.
Following the retirement of former President Ratu Josefa Iloilo on July 30, Nailatikau was appointed acting President.
Ratu Iloilo had nominated Nailatikau as his deputy in early 2007, but the Great Council of Chiefs, which under the 1997 Constitution appointed the President and Vice President, rejected it.
The GCC was subsequently suspended by the then interim Government.
