Three people are homeless after their two bedroom house in a Ba housing subdivision was destroyed in an early morning fire today.

House owner Shrish Chand and his family were asleep in the house when the fire started in the kitchen.

Chand who was the first to see the fire escaped through the front door with the rest of the family. No one was injured.

The National Fire Authority’s initial investigations suggest that the fire might have originated from a short circuit in the meter box located in the kitchen.

NFA Divisional Fire Officer Western Isoa Makutu said people should ensure their property is thoroughly checked by a Fiji Electricity Authority-certified electrical contractor to avoid such unfortunate incidents.

“Fire safety is your responsibility,” he said.
