A couple is homeless after their two bedroom house was burnt down yesterday morning at Nawaicoba village in Nadi.
Firefighters faced difficulty putting the fire out due to windy and dry weather conditions however they fought hard to stop the fire from spreading to a nearby house.
Initial investigations reveal the fire originated from an earthen lamp (diya) in the prayer room.
NFA Divisional Fire Officer Western Isoa Makutu said time and again they saw homes destroyed by fire as a result of prayer diyas left unattended or carelessly handled.
“These items may be necessities used at home but they need to be handled with care by simply placing them on porcelain or tin plates and positioning them away from any overhead material that can cause a fire if accidentally brought into contact,” he said.
He has also requested home owners to ensure that all fire ignitions are put off completely before leaving home to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
According to Makutu fire safety is everyone’s responsibility and properties can be saved from going up in flames by taking extra precautions with such fire ignition sources.
