The chairman of Fiji’s Public Service Commission says he does not think that money is a problem in going ahead with plans to lay off 2500 civil servants next year.
Josefa Serulagilagi told FijiLive he met with Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama on Monday to discuss the proposed redundancies after a directive from the PM’s Office last month ordered it be put on hold due to insufficient funds.
“We are still pushing for it. It is important that the redundancy is carried out as planned,” Serulagilagi said.
Discussions are under way for the redundancy package and the implementation of performance management systems for the civil service, he said.
The documents are also with the Solicitor General’s Office.
“We have to be very careful,” he added.
The redundancy plan would cover those nearing the retirement age of 55.
Serulagilagi earlier said that an ideal number of civil servants would be 21,000 compared to the current 42,000 people on the government pay roll.
