Fiji’s Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama today launched an online theory test for holders of learners’ permits while announcing the merger of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the National Road Safety Council (NRSC).
Without elaborating on the reasons behind the merger, Bainimarama said the move would mean greater awareness and more public education on road safety and ultimately, fewer casualties on Fiji’s roads.
“There are far too many needless deaths on our roads,” he said, while speaking at the launching ceremony at the LTA’s Valelevu headquarters.
“Fiji as a whole continues to lose precious lives every week.”
The Driver Knowledge Test System (DKTS) launched today is part of having safer and better drivers on Fiji’s roads, the LTA said in a statement.
The DKTS will replace the long practiced method of manually asking holders of learners’ permits questions.
The new system will be fully automated where the learner will answer a bulk of 30 questions by touching the computer screen.
Twenty six or more correct answers will qualify for a pass, after which the practical road test will be allowed.
DKTS is available on www.ltafiji.com to help familiarise learners with the new system.
The test can also be accessed on mobiles and will be effective from January 1, 2010.
