A 54-year-old Suva man and his wife have lost their house and all their belongings in a fire this morning.
Basna Nand and his wife were both away at work when the fire started from one of the two bedrooms in their timber and corrugated iron house at the Samabula squatter settlement at Ratu Mara Road.
The National Fire Authority (NFA) said firefighters arrived at the house, located on the side of a steep slope, within five minutes of receiving a call from a neighbour at 9.54am today.
The NFA said the house was destroyed in the fire and firefighters “fought hard against windy weather conditions to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent house located one metre from the fire scene”.
The NFA is trying to determine the cause of the fire.
