Fiji’s Education Ministry has requested schools heads to secure school buildings and facilities after eleven cyclones were predicted by the Nadi Weather Office on Thursday.
In a statement the Ministry said that the warning should not be taken lightly.
Nadi Weather Office director Rajendra Prasad has confirmed to FijiLive that it’s likely that between eight to 11 cyclones will occur in the cluster of Pacific island countries including Fiji and its likely that the first cyclone will happen before the end of the year.
However, the education Ministry said it would appreciate regular practical sessions in safety precautionary measures, heightened geography lessons in learning the signs of disasters and dissemination of charts, posters and pamphlets on disaster awareness.
“A disaster management plan should be in place and everyone in the school system should be aware of this,” said the Ministry.
“Schools are reminded of the tragic tsunamis in Samoa and Indonesia as such catastrophic events teach us to be on the lookout for impending natural disasters.”
