A businessman appeared in the High Court in Lautoka today charged with bribing a customs officer.

Furquan Rizwan, a former Pakistani national, charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) was represented by Iqbal Khan.

Khan asked for an adjournment for the hearing of the application seeking the release of a shipping container in FICAC’s custody.

The items in the container are evidence in this case where Furquan allegedly paid customs officer Joseva Utovou to overlook the consignments in the container.

The case was called before Justice Paul Madigan.

Another interested party present in court today also asked to be noted on record that they would be making a similar application in the civil court next week.

Haroon Ali Shah represented Western Customs Brokers, a customs and forwarding agent.

The matter has been adjourned to 30 November.
