Fiji and neighbouring Pacific islands should expect the first of up to 11 cyclones predicted for the upcoming cyclone season before the year ends.

Nadi weatherman Rajendra Prasad told FijiLive that for the 2009 to 2010 season, two to three cyclones may reach category 3 and category 4 with winds up to 118km/h.

He said Fiji’s six month-long cyclone season, beginning next month, should reach its peak during January, February and March.

And past experiences, according to the Nadi weather office, have shown that between two to three cyclones pass through Fiji waters with one usually affecting land areas.

Prasad said there is a slightly higher chance of the cyclone passing through the northern and eastern parts of the Fiji waters.
