A former judge, who left the judiciary after the abrogation of Fiji’s Constitution on April 10 this year, will be the country’s next ambassador to Japan.
Isikeli Mataitoga will take up his new appointment with effect from October 26, 2009. A Government statement said Mataitoga is also accredited to Philippines, Indonesia and Korea.
Mataitoga returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after leaving the judiciary.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Inoke Kubuabola was Fiji’s previous ambassador to Japan.
Another Foreign Affairs official, Peceli Vocea, has taken up his post as Fiji’s ambassador in Brussels. He is accredited also to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Vocea is also a former permanent secretary for the Ministry of Finance.
Solo Mara, currently serving as counsellor in the Fiji Embassy in Brussels, will takeover from Vocea as Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Civil Aviation from tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Public Service Commission chairman Josefa Serulagilagi said they a looking to appoint a new Roving Ambassador to the Pacific Islands, following the death of Ross Ligairi.
“The Public Service Commission is also considering a proposal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Civil Aviation for strengthening of its capacity through creation of a new division entitled ‘International Co-operation and Sustainable Development’,” Serulagilagi adds.
“The primary functions of the new division, to be headed by a director and supported by two professional staff, would be to coordinate and monitor the implementation of regional and international declarations and commitment in the sustainable development agenda of the country.”
