Fire investigators in Fiji are working to investigate the cause of two house fires this long weekend, one of which involved two brothers being rescued from an early morning blaze and the other leaving an 11-member family homeless.

The National Fire Authority’s acting Chief Fire Officer Tupou Saubulinayau told FijiLive the cause of both fires had not been determined yet.

In Waiqele, Labasa, two brothers aged 13 and 9 were rescued by an uncle after a fire broke out while they were asleep in their home at 5.30am yesterday, the morning after Diwali celebrations nationwide.

At about 10pm the previous night, a house belonging to a 32-year-old University of the South Pacific chef burnt to the ground from a blaze that started from a bedroom curtain, while the family was taking part in festivities outside the house to mark Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

Firefighters could not control the blaze at McFarlane Road in Raiwaqa.
