An Australian woman is among the dead and six others are missing in Samoa after a powerful earthquake triggered a deadly tsunami in the Pacific island nation, an official said Wednesday.
"In Samoa, one Australian woman has been confirmed killed," a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman said.
Three other Australians have been hospitalised after the 8.0 magnitude quake hit the island early Tuesday local time, and Australian officials are also providing assistance to British and Canadian nationals.
"At this stage, six other Australians remain unaccounted for and our High Commission is urgently seeking to confirm their safety," the spokeswoman said.
The disaster has killed at least 36 people but officials fear the toll will rise as the full scale of the damage becomes clear, with tourist resorts believed to be among areas worst hit.
