Fiji’s new university, an amalgamation of six existing State-run tertiary institutions, is set to begin classes early next year.

Education Minister Filipe Bole told local radio, the Fiji National University headquarters will be based at the Fiji College of Advanced Education at Nasinu, outside Suva.

He said work on surveying the site and building will start soon.

The Fiji National University would see the merger of Fiji School of Medicine (FSM), Fiji Institute of Technology (FIT), Fiji College of Advanced Education (FCAE), Fiji School of Nursing (FSN), Fiji College of Agriculture (FCA) and the Lautoka Teachers College (LTC).

A Vice Chancellor, independent of the institutions, will have his/her own secretariat, to oversee the running of the university.

Bole said because the University will be Government-owned and funded by the State, studies offered will be broader than science and technology.

There are currently two universities based in the country; the University of the South Pacific and University of Fiji.
