Fiji’s second largest airport in Nausori will undergo a $2 million upgrade to international standards, a pre-Budget forum in Suva has been told.

Attorney General and Public Enterprise Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told a discussion at the forum that work on the project had already begun and would involve wholesale changes to the airport’s runaway, lighting and culverts.

Sayed-Khaiyum said the upgrade is envisaged to cater for growing interest from foreign airlines wanting to fly in larger aircraft such as the Boeing 737.

Continental Micronesia, scheduled to begin flights to Fiji in December from its Guam hub and Honolulu, is understood to be interested in flying to Nausori.

Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Sada Reddy also told the forum that Fiji needs to develop the Nadi International Airport to five star standards as part of the tourism industry’s drive to reach the 1.5 million visitor arrival mark.
