The second-in-command of Fiji’s military, Land Forces Commander Colonel Pita Driti, says Australia does not have veto powers to stop Fiji’s involvement in international peacekeeping duties through the United Nations.
Driti made the comments to FijiLive in response to overseas media reports that Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had asked the UN to order a progressive replacement of Fijian troops in peacekeeping operations.
Australia should stop being childish, Driti said.
“He should stop crying like a baby and stop wasting his time,” he said.
“We are not worried.”
Driti said Fiji had signed a memorandum of understanding with the UN to cover its peacekeeping services, something that Australia could not change.
