Fiji’s Consumer Council has applauded High Court Chief Registrar Ana Rokomokoti for doing a better job than the country’s Law Society in dealing with complaints against lawyers.
Consumer Council chairman Narendra Padarath said lawyers had been fast to act when complaints were made through the registrar.
“The chief registrar in the past three months has proved to consumers and FLS that an independent system is fairer as it allows due processes, including swift action to be taken as and when issues or complaints are lodged,” said Padarath.
“Last year the council strongly lobbied for an alternative mechanism because the FLS at the time was unable to address many complaints lodged by customers.”
The Fiji Law Society had more than 180 pending cases against legal practitioners when its regulatory powers were moved to the Chief Registrar by decree following the abrogation of the 1997 Constitution in April.
FLS president Dorsami Naidu maintains that the FLS’ system of dealing with complaints had slowed because of previous leadership.
