Fiji’s suspension from the Commonwealth Group of Nations is really a political issue which Tourism Fiji does not perceive as impacting the industry.

Tourism Fiji Chairman Patrick Wong said the industry is apolitical and a “Friendly People’s Business”.

However he said, any likely sanctions by the Commonwealth would be sad as Tourism is a friendly people’s business and Fiji has always been a safe holiday destination and continues to be.

“Under the Government there has not been any restrictions, unrest or military action that has impacted on visitors to our shores with their movements.

“The family segment continues to make up a large portion of our visitor arrivals, many families returning year after year confirming that Fiji meets their expectations, including being safe,” Wong  said.

Also according to Wong, many travel writers, journalists and travel agents/consultants have also visited Fiji under Tourism Fiji’s public relation’s promotional programmes since December 2006.

He said they had come to see for themselves that ‘first-hand’ Fiji is safe and all is well for visitors seeking our “Friendly Fijian Hospitality, and that our Tourism Industry is business as usual, the smiling friendly faces, laughter and the ever warm welcome of the local community”.
