A Labasa man has been taken into custody for allegedly raping a 79-year-old woman.

Police spokesman Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said the man, who is in his thirties, was tasked to look after the elderly woman.

The incident happened over the weekend.

Police allege the woman was at home when the man came after being sent there by a neighbor.

The labourer then allegedly raped her.

Police have expressed concern saying such acts against the weak and the elderly are uncalled for.
