Australia’s Qantas Airways has applied for more traffic rights on the Australia-Fiji sector, www.flightglobal.com reports.

This it said, occurred just days after Virgin Blue's V Australia applied for similar traffic rights.

In a letter to Australia's International Air Services Commission, dated 20 August, Qantas says it wants to have an additional 1,491 seats per week on the Sydney-Nadi route.

This is because from April, Qantas' low-cost carrier subsidiary Jetstar plans to launch a seven-times-weekly service on the route using Airbus A321s, it says.

The new capacity will "comprise of shelf capacity and a portion of the capacity for which V Australia applied for on 12 August," it adds.
