An internal investigation in the police force has discovered that certain officers have been smoking and selling confiscated drugs, says police spokeswoman Ema Dimila.
The investigation is also focusing on suspects believed to be stealing money obtained during robbery arrests.
“Our internal investigation team has been watching these officers for some time now being involved in what we call suspicious activities,” she said.
”These police officers have been suspended until they are able to clear themselves in front of a disciplinary hearing.”
She confirms that certain officers are under investigation for allegedly smoking and selling marijuana that was supposed to have been confiscated during the raids in Navosa and Keiyasi, in the Viti Levu highlands in the past few weeks.
“These so called policemen should have some common sense. They should be setting an example for the members of the public and their action in this case defeats the purpose of them being protectors of the law,” said Dimila.
In this month alone, the police drug unit has confiscated more than $6 million worth of marijuana from Navosa and Kadavu Island, she adds.
