Fiji Police have lifted the tempo on their fight against drugs as students around the country enter the first week of the second term school holiday.
Police Commissioner Esala Teleni said a week ago his team uprooted 12000 marijuana plants from 20 farms with street value running into millions.
“That’s only for one weekend and we’re still raiding farms,” he said.
He said police officers have been to the highlands of Monasavu, Navosa, and even to Kadavu Island to curb cultivation of marijuana.
“We are closely monitoring the activities related to marijuana around Fiji,” he said.
“Our concern right now is to target them because it will be harvesting period as they aim for the school holidays and the Hibiscus Festival period.”
Teleni added that a lot of crimes committed in Fiji are drug related.
“It is sad to say that on the social part of criminal activities - rape, break down of families et cetera are all related to drugs,” he said.
The Commissioner declared war on drugs in Fiji in April and since then his team has been on the go.
He said they also have a police team monitoring marijuana use and cultivation in the outer islands.
“For police this is an ongoing operation,” he added.
