Investors from Australia and the United States of America are interested in setting up hotels in the Lau group says Lau Provincial Council chairman Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara.
Mara told FijiLive in an exclusive interview that talks were still preliminary and nothing had been confirmed yet.
“They are still at the initial stages of discussion,” he said, during the council’s annual meeting in Suva this week.
“I think they were looking at setting up hotels. We have had interested investors from Australia, the US and also potential investors from Asian countries looking at sea products,” he said.
The island group’s main source of income is seaweed, which fetches around $3,000 to $5,000 per tonne.
Other key income earners for the group include copra, sandalwood and beach-de-mer.
