Seven out of 15 women serving life sentences in Fiji’s prisons have been convicted of killing their babies, says Prisons Commissioner Brigadier General Iowane Naivalarua.

In an interview with FijiLive, Naivalurua said infanticide is the most common offense committed by female inmates.

This, he said could have been avoided if they had the support of their respective families.

“I cannot understand how modern parents would pressure their daughters to commit such a crime.

“As a result they have only lost the babies but their daughters too. Why? Because of pride, they are too scared of society’s views towards them.”

Naivalurua said the remaining eight women serving life sentences have been jailed for either murder or fraudulent acts.
