Fiji’s main supplier of cement, Fiji Industries Limited, has run out of cement, causing concrete manufacturer Standard Concrete Industries Limited to put is operations on hold for over a week now.
FIL general manager Josese Davola told FijiLive the company is waiting for clinker, raw material comprising burnt brick or hard cinders, to arrive.
Davola said the shipment is expected on July 23.
“We have been advising our customers,” was all Davola would say.
He said he could not reveal any other details on the matter as yet.
A Standard Concrete Industries Limited official who did not want to be named said the company had put its operations on hold since last week because of the supply shortage.
FIL chairperson Sereana Qoro said she would comment later on the matter.
FIL supplies cement to Pacific Island countries as well.
Fletcher Construction Manager Fiji Graeme Crum and other construction industry figures said they did not want to comment on the effects of the shortage on the industry.
