Two public events scheduled to begin this week have been given the green light by the Ministry of Health despite the increase in confirmed Pandemic H1N1 cases for Fiji.

Ministry of Health spokesman Iliesa Tora said they’ve decided that the Pacific Youth Festival in Suva and the Bula Festival in Nadi will go ahead “but with heightened awareness programs”.

The ministry has reiterated the need for the public to step up precautionary measures after confirming 36 H1N1 cases for the country yesterday.

“People need to listen and make changes to their behaviour,” Tora said.

“That means people should avoid sick people at all costs. Do not get into contact with people who have flu-like symptoms.”

Nine new cases confirmed yesterday were recorded in Lautoka and Nadi.

Tora said these cases came from a batch of 15 samples that were tested at the Mataika House Laboratory in Tamavua.

He said the new cases confirm that the spread of the flu virus continues.

“This was something that we had expected,” he said.
