A new wages order governing increases in minimum wages in the mining and quarrying industries will be out next month, according to Fiji’s Ministry of Labour.
The wages order will cover an average pay increase of 40 cents an hour in both sectors.
Wages Council chairman Father Kevin Barr said representatives from the sectors on the council had been “very agreeable” to the increases.
Nine other wages orders became effective July 1, providing for increases in minimum wages for workers in the following sectors:
* Garment - up 20 percent
* Wholesale & Retail - up 20 percent
* Printing - up 50c an hour for learners
* Building, Civil & Electrical Engineering - up 40cents-50cents
* Hotel & Catering - up 35cents
* Manufacturing - up 50cents
* Security - up 30cents
* Road Transport - up 5 percent
* Saw Milling - up 40 cents
