More than 14 Pacific countries out of the 22 invited have confirmed their participation in the upcoming 2nd Youth festival to be held in Fiji this month.
This was revealed by the University of the South Pacific’s Acting Vice Chancellor Dr Esther Williams, at the signing of a deal between USP and the Government for the use of the university’s facilities.
According to Dr Williams, 22 Pacific countries were invited to this major event and so far more than 14 have confirmed.
USP contribution to the festival includes the free use of computer labs, meeting hall, lecture theatres, swimming pool, accommodation and meals will be provided to participants.
The USP contribution amounts to $200,000.
This weeklong event is expected to bring together over 800 youth leaders aged between 16 to 35 from different territories of the Pacific.
The event will be organized around the theme, Actioning the Youth Agenda and will be structured around five thematic areas for participants to discuss.
These areas include promoting healthy living/lifestyles, Pacific identity, climate change adaptation, governance, peace and security and skills for life.
Government spokesman Neumi Leweni added said the national organizing committee has taken on board the current socio-political environment in the country, including the Public Emergency Regulations that are in place.
“Let me make it absolutely clear that government wants this event o be resoundingly successful- it is in recognition of the tremendous value of our young people,” he added.
The first group of participants – the Tuvaluan delegation are expected to arrive in the country on July 9.
The festival runs from July 13 – 18.
