The Fiji Government is looking to have a new constitution in place with the aim of eradicating racial discrimination, said Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
Speaking during a visit to the people of Dawasamu on the east coast of the main island this week, Bainimarama said he will not tolerate racial discrimination as a way of dividing the people of Fiji.
Bainimarama said he would ensure this even if it means drafting a new constitution for the country.
“It would mean bringing in a new constitution so that racial discrimination, a tool previously used by many politicians to win votes, is eradicated,” he said.
Bainimarama told the villagers that his government does not want to see a repetition of the events of 2000 event where many Fijians, including those from Dawasamu, were misled and supported the overthrow of a Government led by an ethnic-Indian Prime Minister.
