The former Local Government Minister in Laisenia Qarase’s multi-party Cabinet has been sworn in as a magistrate.
Chaitanya Latchman was one of three lawyers appointed to the Magistrates Court by President Ratu Josefa Iloilo this morning
The other new magistrates are Usaia Ratuvili, a staff of the Fiji Human Rights Commission, lawyer, and former Magistrate Eparama Rokoika.
Eleven magistrates have been appointed since the new legal order was put in place by Iloilo following the abrogation of Fiji’s constitution on April 10 this year.
Two High Court judges were also appointed today.
Former Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo and former Permanent Arbitrator William Callenchini were sworn-in as puisne judges by Ratu Iloilo under the Judicial Services Decree.
There are now six judges of the High Court, including Chief Justice Justice Anthony Gates.
