The Fiji Sugar Corporation’s crushing schedule has not gone as planned because of inadequate supply of cane.
In particular, Penang Mill was supposed to start crushing yesterday, but it has now rescheduled to tomorrow.
FSC chief executive Deo Saran said the company would monitor developments and hopes that sufficient cane would become available to allow the commencement of crush by May 21, at the latest.
He said the vast majority of lorries and trucks used for transportation of cane were yet to renew their licences.
“In FSC’s assessment, cane delivery to the mill will consequently be grossly inadequate,” Saran said.
As cane farmers nationwide received their fourth cane payment, the FSC had urged farmers to properly utilise these funds to prepare them for the start of the 2009 crushing season.
