A man was shot and wounded Monday on the campus at prestigious Harvard University, police said.
The man was shot outside Kirkland House, an undergraduate residence, the public relations office for the renowned university in Cambridge, Massachusetts said.
Police Sergeant James DeFrancesco told AFP the victim was "taken to a nearby hospital ... in stable condition."
There was no immediate information about the identity of the victim or of the shooter.
According to a report in the campus newspaper, The Crimson, the victim was found bleeding, but conscious. He was reported to be young, but there was no information indicating whether or not he was a student.
Police blocked off part of the nearby street, the report said.
Shootings at school and college campuses are not uncommon in the United States, although much rarer at elite institutions.
Earlier this month, a man was arrested in the shooting death of a student at the prestigious Wesleyan college in Connecticut.
Last month, a professor at the University of Georgia shot and killed his wife and two others at a community theater.
