The Public Emergency Regulations (PER) have been extended for another 30 days to maintain calm “during these trying times”, says government spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni.

The extension of the PER is the first since it came into force on April 10 following the abrogation of the 1997 Constitution and was due to expire on May 10.

Leweni said the decision to extend the PER to June 10 was made following a series of meetings.

“The decision has to do with the safety of the people and to maintain calm during these trying times,” he said.

The PER gives the police and the military wide ranging powers to detain anyone they feel is being a security threat and gives the government censorship powers over the media.
