The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has applied to the Sugar Industry Tribunal to commence the 2009 crushing season from May.

In its submission to the tribunal yesterday, the FSC suggested that Penang and Labasa Mills commence crushing on May 19 and 28, respectively; and Lautoka and Rarawai Mills to begin on June 9 and 24, respectively.

FSC chief executive Deo Saran said despite the major mill upgrade programme and the slack season maintenance works after the recent devastating floods, the Corporation had put in a lot of effort to get the mills ready for the crush.

He said all this effort had been made to ensure “we are able to make the first three sugar shipments to the EU market by early August because from 1 October 2009, sugar prices reduce by 22 per cent”.

“As such, cooperation and assistance from all stakeholders are sought to ensure timely start of the crushing season,” Saran said.
