Fiji’s domestic communication provider Telecom Fiji Ltd today cleared the air over the omission of the International Direct Dialing (IDD) code 00 from this year’s national directory.
TFL Group general manager Sales, Marketing and Business Development Ian Lyons told FijiLive the page on which the code appeared was paid for by TFL.
This was why TFL slotted in its own IDD code 052 instead of 00, which had traditionally featured as Fiji’s IDD code on the national directory.
“The Fiji Directory is an annual publication done by Fiji Directories Ltd in conjunction with TFL. The publication is a compilation of the business and residential contact details of customers / people in Fiji. While the residential customers are listed Free Of Charge as part of the services that the companies provide, others like business advertisements are paid for,” Lyons said.
“In much the same way, all public access information that is listed in the directory from pg 63 - 76 were compiled and paid for by TFL. You will notice that this section lists telecommunications services provided by TFL. 052 is an international access service that is provided by TFL and pg 67 in the directory is merely advising customer of this service. This publication was in no way meant to offend FINTEL but merely as an advisory for customers.”
The IDD code 00 indicates the usage of international telephone service provided by Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd (FINTEL) while IDD code 052 is a new international telephone service provided by TFL.
FijiLive reported last week that FINTEL had filed official complaints to the Commerce Commission and to the Department of Communication about the incident and it is understood the two companies have met regarding the matter.
”Our main concern is the IDD information provided to the public through the directory,” said George Samisoni, FINTEL’s Manager Commercial and Business Development.
The number wrangle highlights the competition that has begun between TFL and FINTEL in the provision of international telephone service within Fiji, with the deregulation of the international gateway scheduled for July 17 this year.
