The absence of Fiji’s longtime International Direct Dial (IDD) code from this year’s national telephone directory has angered international gateway provider, Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd (FINTEL).
FINTEL has filed official complaints against the omission of the 00 code from the directory, published by Fiji Directories Ltd, a 90 percent owned subsidiary of Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL).
“We have written to the Regulator (Director of Communications) and the Commerce Commission. The issue has also been discussed with TFL's new executives and we have put out a public notice in the papers in regards to IDD calls,” said George Samisoni, FINTEL’s Manager Commercial and Business Development.
”Our main concern is the IDD information provided to the public through the directory,” said Samisoni.
The deregulation of Fiji’s international gateway just two months away makes the two former bedmates hot competitors in the provision of international telephone services.
TFL now provides its own international call service to the Fiji market through the IDD code 052, which has replaced FINTEL’s 00 IDD code on this year’s national directory.
Fiji Directory officials said the page detailing international access numbers was an advertisement paid for by TFL.
TFL has yet to respond to queries on this matter, despite several follow-ups.
