The Sugar Cane Growers Council board has appointed one of its senior executives to the newly created position of general manager operations.
Sundresh Chetty’s appointment becomes effective from April 1 this year.
This is in line with a number of institutional capacity building measures submitted by chief executive Surendra Sharma to strengthen the council’s technical capabilities and better external profiling of its key staff.
Sharma said the new position was also warranted to prepare the council for the impending take over of part of the functions of the Sugar Commission.
Chetty joined the SCGC in 1993 and had served in various capacities in the field and at head office where he had held the substantive position of manager administration and acting CEO for the better part of 2008.
Sharma said Chetty had also been the key council input in spearheading the Fair Trade Certification process, which could result in a very lucrative outcome for Fiji’s cane growers.
Chetty was also appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2006.
