The Fiji Disabled Peoples Association (FDPA) says qualified people with disabilities must be given equal opportunities to be absorbed into the workforce.
And association president Akuila Rewatabua said this is where the interim Government could assist by implementing policies that ensured qualified disabled people employment.
He told FijiLive that the sad fact today was the discrimination against disabled persons to secure a place in the job industry.
“We have so many qualified people with disability in Fiji and they are not considered for employment,” Rewatabua said.
He said at least two percent of job opportunities in the local labour market should be given to people with disabilities.
“Employment and absorption of disabled people into the workforce and the ability to recruit specialised teachers to teach students with disabilities has always been a problem in Fiji,” rewatabua said.
He said this issue needed to be addressed immediately.
Rewatabua said he had addressed this issue with interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Banimarama during his recent visit to the Vocational Training Centre for Persons with Disability in Suva.
