The new management of the Fiji Institute of Technology will be reviewing the dress code policy for its student this year, says school director Dr Ganesh Chand.
The existing dress code disallows girls wearing sleeve-less tops, and short dresses, skirts, and shorts from entering the institute’s premises.
“FIT had put in place a dress code many years ago and this policy has not changed since. The new management will be reviewing this policy during 2009,” he said.
Meanwhile, there have been reports that certain security officers at the Samabula campus entrance have been strict on imposing the dress code on Fijians and Indo-Fijian girls, but lax on girls of other ethnicity.
Dr Chand said he would soon start an investigation into the alleged discriminatory treatment.
“If it is found that there was any discriminatory treatment of students, then those responsible will be taken to task,” he said.
“In the meantime, my advice to students and staff is to ensure that their dressing does not offend any one. As long as students are within the norms of decency, there should be no cause for concern.”
The President of the FIT Commerce Students Association, Ashish Maharaj, said the association has not received any complaints so far on the matter.
“We have not received any complaints, but will take the matter to the Dean of the school once somebody forwards a written complaint,” he said.
“We will not take complaints via phone calls since they could be playing pranks. Students can also visit us in our office and report such incidences.”
