A remake of cult 1980 horror movie "Friday the 13th" sliced up its rivals at the North American box office over the four-day holiday weekend, final figures showed Tuesday.
The 12th film of the successful slasher franchise, featuring hockey mask-wearing killer Jason Voorhees once again terrorizing teenagers, raked in 43.6 million dollars, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
The film relegated romantic comedy "He's Just Not That Into You" into second place on Valentine's Day weekend.
The star-studded romantic comedy set in Baltimore netted another 22.3 million dollars in its second week, for a total of 57.8 million dollars.
In third place was "Taken," a Paris-set thriller which features Liam Neeson as a retired CIA agent seeking the gang of sex traffickers who have kidnapped his daughter. That tale has earned 80.5 million dollars in three weeks.
Animated children's adventure "Coraline" claimed fourth spot, bagging 18.8 million dollars in its second weekend.
The light-hearted romantic comedy "Confessions of a Shopaholic" was worth 17.8 million dollars in its opening week to come in fifth.
"Paul Blart Mall Cop" -- the tale of a security guard turned hero -- dropped one spot from last week to sixth, but continued to up its earnings, which now stand at 112.4 million dollars after five weeks.
"The Pink Panther 2," starring Steve Martin as the hapless Inspector Clouseau, earned 10.8 million dollars.
"The International" which features British actor Clive Owen as an Interpol agent tackling a powerful and shady bank across the globe, came in eighth, earning 10.7 million dollars in its first week.
The Oscar-nominated "Slumdog Millionaire" took ninth place with 8.7 million dollars in its seventh week in theatres, for a total draw so far of 88.1 million dollars, while sci-fi thriller "Push" grabbed 10th place.
