Business owners in flood ravaged Ba Town have called on the interim Government to provide some relief such as tax breaks.

This was suggested at a meeting of some 15 businessmen and women with interim Attorney General and acting Minister for Industry, Tourism, Trade and Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the weekend.

Also raised at the meeting were businesses’ concerns that insurance companies did not offer flood cover given the extent of infrastructural damage.

Ba mayor Praveen Bala said the main issue was that the Ba River, which burst its banks, had not been dredged for many years.

He said years ago, the Ba River was dredged on a regular basis preventing flooding even during heavy downpour.

Sayed-Khaiyum said issues raised at the meeting and suggested solutions would be considered by the interim Government.

He said the major focus at this stage was to ensure the quick and full delivery of the basic amenities of water, electricity and road accessibility.
