The captain of the boat Adi Wea which went missing at sea yesterday while on its way from Gau to Suva is likely to be charged with negligence.
This has been confirmed by Deputy Director Operations SP Erami Raibe.
“The captain could be charged with negligence for disregarding the weather warning by the police,” he said.
Raibe confirmed that the boat which had 24 passengers reached Suva safely about at around 6.30 last night.
SP Raibe said the passengers were from the village of Qarani and consisted of 18 adults and 6 children, the youngest on board was a four month old baby.
“The group departed Gau around 2.45pm yesterday and on its way the engine failed and they were adrift before being rescued and taken to Leleuvia Island,” he said.
According to SP Raibe, the police and Fiji Islands Maritime and Safety Administration escorted the Adi Wea to Nausori early this morning where passengers were questioned.
Police have again reminded the public not to travel as the country continues to face adverse weather conditions.
