Papua New Guinea’s Dame Carol Kidu is the winner of the 2008 Regional Rights Resource Team/ South Pacific Human Rights Award.
Kidu was recognized for her campaigns for measures to reduce the rate of HIV infection and set up vocational skills workshops for people living with HIV.
She was among four people who were honoured at the 2008 RRRT/SPC Pacific Human Rights award last night at the Alliance Francais in Suva.
There were 18 nominations from 10 different countries for the awards.
Lynnsay Ronggokea-Francis of the Cook Islands won Special Recognition for Long Term Support for the Rights of Women.
Member of the judging panel Tanya Smith said Ronggokea-Francis has consistently advanced the cause of women in the Cook Islands.
Special Citations for Advancing the Rights of Persons with Disabilities were awarded to Setareki Macanawai and Andonia Piau-Lynch.
The four winners share a total of F$7,500 in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the field of human rights.
RRRT/SPC programme manager Sandra Bernklau said for nearly 10 years, they have presented awards to Pacific Island organisations that have shown extraordinary dedication to promoting and protecting the rights of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups across the region.
