Fiji retailers say in announcing next year’s budget Government should create an environment where investors will be attracted so that more employment opportunities can be created for locals.
Retailers Association president Himmat Lodhia said Government should create huge incentives for export oriented-industries.
“We need large and medium-size industries and investments to generate more job opportunities in Fiji,” he said.
Retailers also hope that VAT will not be increased.
“We are also expecting a reasonable budget with a reduction in duty rates, to attract local and overseas shoppers.
“The Duty Free port and attractions of yester years is now quickly becoming a thing of the past. We must re-introduce and inject fresh ideas into the shopping industry,” he said.
Lodhia said with the current economic conditions in Fiji, retailers understand that times are tough and it is important that Government manages its expenditure at a controlled limit.
“There should be accountability and transparency,” he said.
Also, the budget for infrastructure development must be increased as this is what Fiji needs.
Retailers are also supporting the call for an increased allowance for the Police Force in order to boost security.
“We would like to see an increase in their capital budget allocation to facilitate the forces with the desired equipment,” he said.
“The Government of the day has made a lot of promises to the people.
“Maybe this is a good time to fulfil them and at the same time balance their books,” he added.
