A plea hearing for actor Ryan O'Neal and his son on drug possession charges was postponed by a court in Malibu on Thursday until early next year.

The 67-year-old star of classic 1970s films "Love Story" and "Paper Moon" had been due to be arraigned on a charge of felony possession of methamphetamine along with his son Redmond, 23.

Thursday's hearing was postponed until January 9, however, after defense lawyers requested more time to examine evidence provided by prosecutors.

The two were arrested in September after sheriff's deputies discovered narcotics while conducting a probation search of O'Neal's home in connection with an earlier drugs case involving his son.

The search was carried out after Redmond O'Neal pleaded guilty to felony drug possession and driving under the influence.

Ryan O'Neal's lawyer Mark Werksman said last month that any drugs found at the actor's home had not belonged to him.

"It's unfortunate that these charges were filed because these drugs did not belong to Ryan O'Neal, and he should not be prosecuted for it," Werksman said.

"This is very upsetting to him."

Redmond O'Neal, whose mother is actress Farrah Fawcett, faces a felony drug possession charge and three misdemeanor counts.
