One of India's most respected filmmakers, B.R. Chopra, who was behind a string of classic movies released in the 1950s and 60s, died Wednesday, his family said. He was 94.
Chopra died at his home in suburban Bombay, relatives said.
The veteran producer-director, known for injecting socially relevant themes into his films while still catering to populist tastes, had been ill for some time.
Chopra's career spanned several decades and included major hits such as "Naya Daur" (New Era) in the 1950s, which starred Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar.
The hits kept coming with "Gumrah"(Lost) and "Waqt" (Time) in the 1960s, through to "Nikaah" (Marriage) in the 1980s.
He later produced the hugely popular television serial of the Indian epic "Mahabharata."
