A police officer arrested his patrol partner for stealing a bottle of wine and a music player from a suspect's van, a mayor in corruption-prone Mexico said Monday.

A suspect released from police custody after paying a fine for creating a disturbance in the street "returned and said that a music player and a bottle of wine were missing from his van," said the mayor of Jesus Maria town in central Aguascalientes state.

The police officer later found the objects in the car of his partner, who had been keeping watch on the suspects' van, and turned him in, said Mayor Gregorio Zamarripa.

"We're going to award the officer for this act of honesty," Zamarripa said. "Although some of his colleagues were annoyed by his action, that is how the police should always act."
