"Eagle Eye," a futuristic thriller with a "Big Brother" style villain who infiltrates phones, TVs and computers, debuted as the weekend box office leader with 29.2 million dollars in ticket sales, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Movie industry tracker Exhibitor Relations gave second place to the love story "Nights in Rodanthe" starring Diane Lane and Richard Gere, set in the romantic seaside backdrop of North Carolina's Outer Banks, with 13.6 million dollars.
In third place, with seven million dollars in sales, was the dark thriller "Lakeview Terrace," starring Samuel L. Jackson as a cop who torments his neighbors.
"Fireproof" depicting the private travails of a heroic fire department captain, opened in fourth with 6.5 million dollars.
Fifth was "Burn After Reading," the latest movie from Oscar-winning film-making siblings Joel and Ethan Coen, with 6.1 million dollars in receipts.
Rounding out the top ten were: in sixth place "Igor," voiced by John Cusack, which took in 5.5 million dollars; Police drama "Righteous Kill" earning just over 3.8 million dollars; the romantic comedy "My Best Friend's Girl," with 3.8 millions dollars; Spike Lee's "Miracle at St. Anna" with 3.5 million dollars and the melodrama "The Family that Preys" with 3.2 million dollars.
For the first time in two-and-a-half months, the blockbuster Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" failed to break into the top ten, after collecting a staggering half-billion dollars during the summer movie season.
