South Africa's new President Kgalema Motlanthe said Thursday he would keep Finance Minister Trevor Manuel in his post, recognising his role in leading the nation to sustained growth.
Manuel had resigned from the cabinet after the ruling party forced former president Thabo Mbeki from office, but had indicated that he was ready to serve in the new administration.
He is seen by investors as vital to the country's stable economy, and his resignation sparked market jitters that caused the value of the rand currency to drop on Tuesday.
