Legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle turned 75 Monday, marking her birthday by releasing a new album.
"Precious Platinum" was released 60 years after she began her career as a "playback singer" -- an artist who records music for film actors to mime on screen during Bollywood's set-piece song and dance routines.
Famed for her voice modulations and evocative singing style, Bhosle has amassed a collection of more than 12,000 songs in Hindi and Marathi, which is widely spoken in her home state of Maharashtra in western India.
British band Cornershop paid tribute to Bhosle's hearthrob status for generations of Indians in their 1997 hit "Brimful of Asha", which was later remixed by DJ Fatboy Slim.
She has also sung with international artists including Boy George and REM's Michael Stipe, and had her work sampled by the likes of Nelly Furtado and Black Eyed Peas.
